Barney L. Doyle, Captain of the Guard
Barney has an identical twin brother, Sam. They were born and raised on the family farm outside of Manhattan, Kansas. Barney, his son, Jeff, and Sam still own the family farm. Barney graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Physics in 1971 and then received his Doctorate from the University of North Carolina in 1976. He has been a Physicist with Sandia National Laboratories for the last 30, years where he is manager of the Physics Department and has had this position for the last 23 years.
Barney met his wife Sandy while they were attending Kansas State University. They have been married for 38 years. Their Son, Jeff, his wife Colleen, and granddaughter, Chloe, also live in Albuquerque. Sandy received her BS and MBA from the UNM and earned her CMA, Certified Management Accountant. Sandy worked for the City of Albuquerque for most of her professional career, and retired two years ago as the Director of Finance and Administration.
Barney became a Master Mason in Sandia Mountain Lodge #72 in 2002 and today serves as the Musician of the Lodge. He became a member of the Santa Fe Bodies of the Scottish Rite and joined Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple.
Barney shared this with us. "Quite frankly, I joined the Masons with the idea that then I could become a legitimate "Shriner" and play in the Jazz Band, but after finding out what the Masons were all about, I am actually more active with that organization. My father and older brother were Masons in a Lodge in Leonardville, Kansas, a town of only 300 people, think about that! After learning about Masonry, I finally understand all of the lectures my Dad gave Sam and I while we were growing up!"
After he became a member of Ballut Abyad Barney immediately became a member of our Million Dollar Band and plays the piano in the Shrine Jazz Band, the Nobles of Note, and "says" he attempts to play the drums in the Shrine Concert Band.
Barney was appointed by Bill Broughall in 2008, and Barney explains, "when Bill offered me the appointment of Captain of the Guard I accepted in a microsecond. I am so honored to be Bill's selection, I can't express it here in words."
Now how about that for a Positive Attitude!!
